EGGCETTERA UPDATE – FEBRUARY 2019, written by Tim Somes, Owner Eggcettera
The farm is terribly dry. We are now in a worse situation than we were at in October last year and unfortunately Cyclone Oma didn’t send any rain our way.
All our animals have increased their consumption of supplementary feed due to the lack of green grass!
The chooks are going well, however they are not enjoying the heat. We offset this by running large pools of water onto the ground which they stand in and bath in the wet earth. This helps keep them cool. Egg production is average at best.
The pigs are enjoying their wallowing enormously with their mud baths topped up on a daily basis.
The lambs are enjoying the warmer weather. With both dams dry once again they are now drinking from troughs filled with underground bore water. All lambs are shorn at this time of year so they are not carrying too much wool, thus keeping them a little cooler.
The goats are enjoying the box Gum tree branches in their paddock and we also have quite a few nannies expecting kids in the next few weeks. We’ll send through some photos when the bubs arrive!
Finally, the beer malt beef steers are missing their green grass and spend a lot of their time standing in or around their water trough catching a cool breeze.
They are tough times on the farm with the dry at the moment, with the ongoing dry weather we have seen all supplementary feed costs increase significantly.

Fingers crossed we will see a change in the season for better.
